The Run for Clarity initiative in 2018 is in full swing. Since the beginning of June Kohler Associates teams around the world are running for a good cause. They are showing support and empathy for people who are lacking access to clean drinking water and must walk long distances to find clean water sources. Some teams are showing their support through big events as in South Korea, while others like the Asia-Pacific team just gathered a few friends from the office and their families to get out for a healthy and fun activity. The Asia-Pacific team in Shanghai ran 162 kilometers on 18 August 2018 in the city of Shanghai where they are based. 48 team members pledged to contribute to the to the overall goal of running a total of 80,125 kilometers until the end of October 2018. Once achieved, 40,000 people in rural areas without ready access to drinking water will receive the gift of Clarity water filters. The easy-to-use water filtration system with a ceramic core that doesn’t require any electricity helps families to improve their lives and living conditions significantly. The water filters set up in their homes can provide up to 40 liters of drinking water. Water can be collected from a stream or river nearby or rainwater can be used to fill the upper compartment of the well-designed Clarity filter. The water then filters through the ceramic core that eliminates more than 99% of bacteria and protozoa from unsafe water. Shanghainese are no strangers to pollution and polluted water. Although the country is making progress in this respect, still more than 20 percent of the water in the Liaohe basin in the northeast, China’s industrial rustbelt, is completely unusable and not fit for human contact (source: Reuters). Couple dirty water with poverty and people are headed for disaster. The Run for Clarity is only a small step and activity to help alleviate some of the hardship underprivileged families experience. The Run for Clarity contributes also to raising awareness of this worldwide crisis.
